Skiing Off-piste and Squaw Valley

When: 2017-05-14 to 2017-05-15

Day 1: Off-piste

Not wanting to deal with the parking situation at Mt. Rose, we headed back to a snow field that we eyed on the way up. Having just had our ski bindings mounted from Start Haus, we had no reason to pass this opportunity up for a second time.

Preparing the gear for an afternoon into the backcountry.

Francisco on skies.

Walking on skies.

Once we reached a decently sized hill, we took the skins off and prepared for a run on the unknown terrain. While it's generally advisable to scout the downhill route as you go uphill, the situation did not accomodate that. However, with the snow condition being what it is, most of the danger was mitigated.

Francisco, excited.

Once we reached the bottom, we would need to add the skins back to our skis for the upward trek. #earnyourturns.

Day 2: Squaw Valley

After finding our feet on some green runs, Jay took us to the blues where I stumbled and tumbled down a few hills. However, it was helpful to become accustomed to turning on steeper angles.

Easy way out.

More practice with the hockey stops.
